Mixed Marriages / Interbreeding

Sumerian name: LU.LU / NAM.LU.LU (𒉆𒇽𒇽) β€” "mixed ones"

One of the most controversial aspects of Zecharia Sitchin's Anunnaki narrative is the concept of interbreeding β€” sexual unions between the Anunnaki ("gods") and human women. This theme appears in both the biblical account (the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men") and in Sumerian mythology.

The Biblical Account

"When human beings began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose." (Genesis 6:1-2)

"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days β€” and also afterward β€” when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes of old, warriors of renown." (Genesis 6:4)

Sitchin read this as a literal historical account:

  • "Sons of God" (Bene Elohim) = The Anunnaki, specifically the younger generation
  • "Daughters of men" (Benot Ha-Adam) = Human women
  • Nephilim = The hybrid offspring, literally "those who were cast down"

Sitchin's Interpretation

The Motivation

Sitchin proposed several reasons for Anunnaki-human unions:

  1. Genetic experimentation β€” Continuing the genetic manipulation that created humanity
  2. Affection β€” Genuine emotional bonds between Anunnaki and humans
  3. Political alliance β€” Marrying into human royal lines to establish control
  4. Reproduction β€” Anunnaki women had difficulty bearing children on Earth; human women were more fertile

The Hybrid Offspring

The children of these unions were the Nephilim β€” semi-divine beings who became the heroes and kings of ancient legend. Sitchin identified:

  • Gilgamesh β€” Two-thirds god, one-third human
  • The demigods of Greek mythology (Heracles, Perseus)
  • The "heroes of old" mentioned in Genesis

"The offspring of the Anunnaki and human women were not myths. They were the hybrid rulers of ancient city-states β€” stronger, wiser, and longer-lived than ordinary humans."

Sumerian Parallels

The Sumerian King List records kings with extraordinarily long reigns in the antediluvian period. Sitchin argued that these kings were Nephilim β€” hybrids who lived longer than humans but not as long as the immortal Anunnaki.

The Enlil-Enki Divide

Enlil strongly disapproved of interbreeding, viewing it as a violation of the natural order. Enki, by contrast, was more accepting β€” perhaps because he had already created humanity as a hybrid species.
