Nibiru

Nibiru (Sumerian: Nibiru, “Crossing” or “Planet of the Crossing”) is the hypothetical twelfth planet that forms the cornerstone of Zecharia Sitchin’s cosmology. According to Sitchin, Nibiru is a large planet with a highly elliptical 3,600-year orbit that brings it into the inner solar system during each “crossing.”

The Sumerian Source

Sitchin identified Nibiru from Sumerian astronomical texts and cylinder seals. The term Nibiru in Akkadian means “crossing” or “ford” — the point where a river is crossed. Sitchin used this to mean the “place of crossing” — where Nibiru crosses the paths of the other planets.

The Enuma Elish

In the Enuma-Elish, Sitchin identified Nibiru with Marduk, the champion of the gods who defeated Tiamat. The epic describes:

  • Marduk’s creation from the primordial cosmic waters
  • His selection as champion against Tiamat
  • His defeat of Tiamat using the “winds” (forces)
  • His splitting of Tiamat’s body to create the heavens and Earth
  • His establishment of the “station of Nibiru” as the celestial crossing point

Evidence Claimed by Sitchin

  1. Sumerian Astronomical Knowledge — The Sumerians depicted all planets known today (including Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) in correct order
  2. Cylinder Seals — VA/243 (a cylinder seal from Nippur) shows 11 celestial bodies around a large star, which Sitchin interpreted as the Sun surrounded by planets including Nibiru
  3. The Celestial Battle — The asteroid belt is the remains of Tiamat, shattered by Nibiru’s gravitational pull
  4. Biblical References — The “wandering star” and “the day of the Lord” as Nibiru’s approach

The 3,600-Year Orbit

Sitchin derived Nibiru’s orbital period from the Sumerian NERU — a unit of 3,600 years. Key events in Sitchin’s chronology are separated by multiples of 3,600:

  • Anunnaki arrival on Earth: ~450,000 years ago (125 NÉRU)
  • Creation of Adamu: ~445,000 years ago
  • The Great Flood: ~13,000 years ago (just over 3.5 NÉRU)
  • The Rise of Sumer: ~3,800 BCE (approximately one NÉRU before the present era)

Scientific Status

Nibiru as described by Sitchin is not recognized by mainstream astronomy. The hypothetical “Planet Nine” or “Planet X” proposed by astronomers (Batygin & Brown, 2016) is a different concept — a Neptune-sized planet in a distant 10,000–20,000 year orbit. Sitchin’s Nibiru would be detectable if it existed, and its 3,600-year orbit would be gravitationally disruptive.

  • “Nibiru” is a genuine term: Both Sitchin and mainstream Assyriology agree Nibiru (“crossing,” “ford”) appears in Babylonian astronomical texts as a real astronomical term.

  • The Enuma Elish names the station of Nibiru: Both agree the epic assigns a celestial “station of Nibiru” as a crossing-point in the sky.

  • Babylonian astronomy was sophisticated: Both agree Mesopotamian astronomers tracked the planets with real precision for their era.

  • The cylinder seal VA243 exists: Both agree the seal Sitchin cites is a genuine artifact in the Berlin collection.

  • 3,600 is a real Sumerian unit: Both accept the šár (3,600) as a core sexagesimal value.

Where They Differ

  • Planet or point: Sitchin says Nibiru is a hidden twelfth planet on a 3,600-year retrograde orbit. Mainstream reads Nibiru as an astronomical position or star, most often identified with Jupiter.

  • VA243: Sitchin reads the central symbol as the Sun ringed by all the planets, Nibiru included. Assyriologists, including the holding museum, read it as a conventional star with astral dots in a presentation scene.

  • Outer planets: Sitchin says the Sumerians knew Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Mainstream finds only the naked-eye planets in the record.

  • The asteroid belt: Sitchin says it is the wreckage of Tiamat, shattered by Nibiru. Mainstream says it is planetesimals that never accreted under Jupiter’s gravity.

  • Planet Nine: Sitchin’s followers cite it as vindication. Mainstream notes Planet Nine, if real, is Neptune-sized on a 10,000-plus-year orbit - not Sitchin’s Nibiru.
