Anunnaki (Sumerian: A.NUN.NA.KI — “Those Who from Heaven to Earth Came”)

Sumerian name: A.NUN.NA.KI (𒀭𒀀𒉣𒈾𒆠) — “Those Who from Heaven Came” or “Princely Offspring”

The Anunnaki are the central figures of Zecharia Sitchin’s Earth Chronicles — an extraterrestrial civilization from the planet Nibiru who arrived on Earth approximately 450,000 years ago. In Sumerian mythology, the Anunnaki were the pantheon of gods who ruled over Mesopotamia. Sitchin reinterpreted them not as mythological deities but as flesh-and-blood astronauts who came to Earth seeking gold and inadvertently created humanity.

Origin: Nibiru

According to Sitchin’s reading of the Enuma Elish, the Anunnaki originated on Nibiru — a planet in an elongated 3,600-year orbit around our Sun. Nibiru’s atmosphere was deteriorating, and the Anunnaki needed gold particles suspended in their atmosphere to repair it. This crisis drove their first expedition to Earth.

The Anunnaki Expedition

First Landing (c. 450,000 BCE)

The first Anunnaki expedition was led by Enki, the chief scientist, who landed in the Persian Gulf and established Eridu — the first Anunnaki settlement on Earth. The initial mission was to extract gold from the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The Gold Mines (c. 415,000 BCE)

When surface gold proved insufficient, the Anunnaki established deep-mining operations in southern Africa — specifically at what Sitchin identified as the ancient mines of Abzu. This was brutal manual labor assigned to the Igigi — the lesser Anunnaki who served the senior gods.

The Igigi Rebellion

After 3,600 years of mining, the Igigi rebelled. According to the Atra-Hasis Epic, they burned their tools and surrounded Enlil’s temple. This rebellion was the catalyst for the most consequential decision in human history: the creation of a replacement worker species.

The Creation of Humanity

Enki, working with Ninmah (the mother goddess), used genetic engineering to create Homo sapiens — the Adamu — by combining Anunnaki DNA with that of Homo erectus. This event is recorded in Sumerian creation texts and, according to Sitchin, in the biblical account of Adam.

The Names of the Anunnaki

In Sumerian texts, the Anunnaki are referred to by several names:

  • A.NUN.NA.KI — “Those who from heaven to earth came”
  • Anunnaki — The standard Akkadian form
  • Anunna — The older Sumerian form
  • DINGIR (𒀭) — The determinative prefix for “god” or “deity”

Sitchin argued that the term DINGIR was not a religious designation but a functional one — indicating a being from “the place of the rocketships.”

The Anunnaki Legacy

The Anunnaki left profound marks on human civilization:

  • Writing — The Sumerian cuneiform script, taught to humanity by the Anunnaki
  • Kingship — The institution of kingship, established as “lowered from heaven”
  • Law — The first law codes, attributed to divine origin
  • Astronomy — Advanced knowledge of the solar system, including planets invisible to the naked eye
  • Architecture — Megalithic construction techniques that remain unexplained
  • Calendar — The 12-month calendar based on Nibiru’s influence

Cuneiform Evidence

The term “Anunnaki” appears in numerous Sumerian and Akkadian texts. The Sumerian King List (WB 444) opens with the descent of kingship from heaven — the Anunnaki establishing the institution of rule on Earth. Mesopotamian temple hymns regularly invoke the Anunnaki as the divine council that determines the fates of cities and kings.

Sitchin Analysis

Where Sitchin Agrees with Mainstream

  • “Anunnaki” is a genuine collective term: Both Sitchin and mainstream Assyriology agree that Anunna(ki) names a group of gods across Sumerian and Akkadian texts. This is not disputed.

  • They form the divine assembly: Both agree the Anunnaki act as the council of gods that fixes fates and legitimizes kings.

  • Sumerian achievements are real: Both agree the Sumerians produced writing, base-60 mathematics, codified law, and the ideology of kingship “lowered from heaven.”

  • DINGIR marks a deity: Both agree the sign DINGIR is the determinative and word for “god.”

  • Humanity is created to labor: Both agree the texts state humankind was made to bear the toil of the gods.

Where They Differ

  • Astronauts or gods: Sitchin says the Anunnaki were flesh-and-blood extraterrestrials from Nibiru. Mainstream reads them as deities of a polytheistic religion.

  • The etymology: Sitchin glosses A.NUN.NA.KI “those who from heaven to Earth came.” Mainstream reads it “offspring of An” or “princely ones.”

  • DINGIR: Sitchin says it meant “from the place of the rocketships.” Mainstream says it simply means “god,” written with the star sign.

  • Astronomical knowledge: Sitchin says they charted Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Mainstream finds only the naked-eye planets in cuneiform astronomy.

  • Human origins: Sitchin says they engineered Homo sapiens from Homo erectus. Mainstream reads the creation account as myth; human evolution is natural.

PRO vs CONTRA

“Anunnaki” is a real collective term for a group of Sumerian godsAgreed - but deities of a polytheistic religion, not astronauts
A.NUN.NA.KI means “those who from heaven to Earth came”Assyriologists read it “offspring of An” or “princely ones”
DINGIR marks beings “from the place of the rocketships”DINGIR is the determinative and word for “god,” written with the star sign
The Sumerians charted Uranus, Neptune, and PlutoCuneiform astronomy identifies only the naked-eye planets; the outer worlds are absent
They engineered Homo sapiens from Homo erectusHuman evolution is a natural, documented process; the texts give a creation myth
They gave humanity writing, law, and kingship fully formedEach of these has a traceable, gradual development in the Mesopotamian record
Megalithic techniques they left remain unexplainedAncient construction methods are well understood by archaeology and experiment
Their home was Nibiru on a 3,600-year orbitNo such planet exists; 3,600 is the sexagesimal šár, a counting unit
The gold-mining mission explains the creation of humansThe “made to bear the gods’ toil” motif is theology of the human condition
