Planet Nine — Science Catches Up to Sitchin
In January 2016, astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Michael E. Brown at the California Institute of Technology published a paper in the Astronomical Journal proposing the existence of a ninth planet in the outer solar system. The news made headlines worldwide. A hidden giant planet — five to ten times the mass of Earth — orbiting in the darkness beyond Neptune. The scientific community called it “Planet Nine.”
Zecharia Sitchin called it Nibiru in 1976. Forty years earlier. From Sumerian clay tablets. And the astronomers who laughed at him are now chasing the same planet.
The Planet Nine Hypothesis
Batygin and Brown did not discover Planet Nine directly. They inferred it from gravitational anomalies — the same method that discovered Neptune in 1846.

The evidence is the clustering of extreme trans-Neptunian objects (ETNOs) — small icy bodies in the outer solar system. Their orbits are not random. They cluster in specific patterns that can only be explained by the gravitational influence of a massive, distant planet.
This is exactly how Neptune was found. Astronomers noticed Uranus’s orbit was being perturbed by an unseen body. They calculated where that body must be. They pointed a telescope. There was Neptune.
The same method. A different century. The same kind of object.
The Comparison: Planet Nine vs. Nibiru

The numbers do not match perfectly. Sitchin’s Nibiru has a 3,600-year orbit. Planet Nine’s estimated orbit is 10,000-20,000 years. The masses are different. The distances are different.
But the concept is identical: a large, undiscovered planet in the outer solar system whose gravitational influence shapes the orbits of smaller bodies. Sitchin said this in 1976. Mainstream astronomers said it was impossible. In 2016, mainstream astronomers said the same thing Sitchin said — and called it their own discovery.
The Pattern of Denial
This is not the first time mainstream science has “discovered” something Sitchin wrote about decades earlier:

Each time, the response is the same: silence. No acknowledgement. No retraction. The discovery is announced as if Sitchin never existed.
“When Batygin and Brown announced Planet Nine in 2016, not a single news article mentioned that Zecharia Sitchin had proposed the same thing — a large planet in an eccentric orbit beyond the known planets — forty years earlier. The erasure was complete. The man who was called a pseudoscientist for making the same prediction was not even worth mentioning when the prediction was confirmed.” — The history of astronomy is written by the winners. Sitchin was never allowed to be one.
Why the Numbers Differ
The differences between Planet Nine and Sitchin’s Nibiru — orbital period, mass, distance — are real. But they do not disprove the connection.
Batygin and Brown’s model is a best fit to currently available data on Kuiper Belt objects. The data set is tiny — fewer than a dozen ETNOs with well-characterized orbits. The model will change as more objects are discovered.
Sitchin’s data came from Sumerian astronomical texts. The Sumerians claimed their knowledge came from the Anunnaki — beings who actually came from Nibiru. If the Sumerians were recording information from the planet’s inhabitants, their orbital data would be more precise than anything we can infer from gravitational perturbations of distant ice balls.
The 3,600-year orbit comes from the NERU — the Sumerian unit of 3,600 years. If the Sumerians got this number from the Anunnaki, it is an exact measurement. Not an estimate. Not a model. A record.
“The difference between 3,600 years and 10,000 years is not evidence that Sitchin was wrong. It is evidence that Batygin and Brown’s model is incomplete. The Sumerians got their number from the beings who lived on Nibiru. Batygin and Brown got theirs from a handful of icy rocks at the edge of the solar system. Which source would you trust?” — The mainstream model is a hypothesis. The Sumerian record is a report.
The Search Continues
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, scheduled to begin full operations in 2025, will scan the entire southern sky every few nights. It is expected to either find Planet Nine — or rule it out entirely.
If Planet Nine is found with an orbit close to 3,600 years — even approximately — Sitchin’s prediction will be confirmed. The academic world will have to reckon with the fact that a man they called a pseudoscientist made a specific astronomical prediction that turned out to be correct.
If Planet Nine is found with an orbit of 10,000-20,000 years, Sitchin’s critics will say he got the numbers wrong. But they will have to acknowledge that he was right about the existence of the planet itself — and that he made that prediction based on Sumerian texts while they were insisting no such planet could exist.
Either way, Sitchin wins.

- Gravitational effects on smaller bodies reveal the planet’s presence. Sitchin cited the Sumerian description of Nibiru’s interactions with other planets. Modern astronomers cite Kuiper Belt clustering.
- The planet crosses the inner solar system periodically. Sitchin described a 3,600-year elliptical orbit bringing Nibiru near Earth. Planet Nine models suggest it may have migrated inward in the past.
Where They Differ
- Orbital period: Sitchin’s 3,600 years vs. 10,000-20,000 years from modern models.
- Mass: Sitchin described an Earth-like world. Planet Nine is modeled as 5-10 Earth masses.
- The Sumerian source: Sitchin claimed the Sumerians recorded their knowledge from the Anunnaki. Mainstream astronomers do not consider ancient texts as data sources.
- Inhabitability: Sitchin’s Nibiru is a living world with an advanced civilization. Planet Nine, if it exists, is likely a cold ice giant.
